All 6th grade ESM students have began their first semester interdisciplinary service-learning project. Students will soon design scaled models of new sustainable and kid-friendly structures around the Silver Lake Complex. The proposed structures will be presented at a community forum organized by Silver Lake Move Forward, a neighborhood nonprofit organization dedicated to remaking the Silver Lake Reservoirs around the values of access, beauty and conservation.
As part of this project, we went for the first time to the Silver Lake Reservoir, on Friday, September 27th. We walked around the reservoir, conducted a trash audit and clean up around the footpath near the meadow, studied living species, brainstormed ideas for new structures and enhancements, and did some creative writing.
Thank you to all the parent volunteers that joined us. See pictures below.
Students pinned the exact location where their proposed structures would go.
